- W2009273067 abstract "Abstract The two mechanisms suggested for the rate determining step of the palladium(II) chloride oxidation of ethylene to acetaldehyde are: (1)_ rate determining addition of coordinated hydroxyl to ethylene to give a β-hydroxy-ethylpalladium(II0 species (hydroxypalladation); (2) hydroxypalladation involving trans attack of water in an equilibrium step. Thus, the two mechanisms can be distinguished by a determination of the rate limiting step of the reaction. Allyl alcohol is oxidized by palladium(II) chloride in aqueous solution to β-hydroxypropanal, a product which must be derived from a symmetrical hydroxypalladation adduct. By deuteration the rate determining step can be determined as shown below: If hydroxypalladation is an equilibrium process (k1 &> &> k2) Ia will be isomerized into a 50:50 mixture of Ia and Ib before appreciable oxidation occurs. The experimental result is that very little isomerization of Ia to Ib occurs during the course of oxidation. Thus, hydroxypalladation must be the slow step, a result which supports mechanism 1." @default.
