Physical activity and bone measures in young children: the Iowa bone development study. Pediatrics. 2001;107:1387–1393. Researchers in Iowa performed an 8-hospital multicenter cohort study between 1992 and 1995, following 368 children, 179 male, ages 4 to 6 years to observe the relationship between physical activity and bone measures. Hip, lumbar spine and total bone measures were made by dual energy radiograph absorptiometry (DXA). Physical activity was assessed by accelerometry over 4 consecutive days that included 1 weekend day during fall months (calculated as total movement counts divided by total time in minutes), parental reports of daily physical activity, and television viewing time. Age, weight, and height adjustments were made and partial correlation coefficients between physical activity and each of the bone measurements were calculated. A stepwise linear regression model was constructed with bone measures as the... You do not currently have access to this content." @default.
