• W2009328521 abstract "Abstract This article examines policies and the changes in the sugarbeet industry of Iran during the oil boom. It presents the results of a large-scale microeconomic study. While industry output and production by large-holders fell, there was a notable increase in the output of peasant and medium producers. Thus, while the sugar industry was part of the lagging sector, the peasant subsector of the industry was part of the booming sector. By increasing protected cash crop production and non-agricultural employment, peasants were able to capture a greater share of the oil income. The results are similar to those reported by Scherr for Mexico, and strongly support the hypothesis that countries with a peasant-dominated agriculture are better able to cope with the macroeconomic effects of the commodity export booms." @default.
