- W2009351624 abstract "An extensive survey of male germ cells from various arthropods has shown that these cells—in contrast to oocytes—normally are devoid of intracellular parasitic or symbiontic microorganisms. Only in four instances have we seen sperm cells that contain rickettsiae or viruses. The four instances represent different animal groups and different types of (presumably) infectious microorganisms: A large bird spider (Pamphobeteus sp., Araneae) had rickettsiae in its spherical coenospermia, a firebug (Pyrrhocoris apterus, Hemiptera) showed large quantities of rhabdoviruses in the extracellular spaces of the testis and within the primary spermatocytes, some mites (Pergamasus barbarus, Acari) had viruses or virus-like particles in a hexagonal close-packing within the sperm cytoplasm (presumably a parvovirus or a picornavirus), and one sandfly (Phlebotomus papatasii, Diptera) had small viruses or virus-like particles in the nucleus of the late spermatid. It was striking that the rickettsiae and viruses were found in one (or for the mite some) individual only, whereas the majority of the individuals of the same species were seen to be devoid of them. We conclude that these microorganisms represent agents that infect the arthropod hosts." @default.
