- W2009355852 abstract "A study of the effect of hysterectomy on the corpus luteum in pseudopregnant rabbits was conducted. Blood serum levels of progesterone were determined by radioimmunoassay and ovulation was ascertained by laparotomy. The highest progesterone levels for the control and hysterectomized groups were observed on Day 9 of the estrous cycle when levels were 12.0 ng/ml for the controls and 11.3 ng/ml for the hysterectomized group. On Day 15 the progesterone levels in the controls had fallen to 3.7 ng/ml whereas the hysterectomized group showed levels of 10.1 ng/ml. Serum progesterone levels continued to be higher in the hysterectomized group through Day 30. The results are in accord with the findings of Asdell and Hammond in that the corpus luteum function is extended 6-10 days beyond the normal 14-16-day pseudopregnant period. It was concluded that this effect could be due to the removal of a uterine luteolysin or the estrogen sparing effect of total hysterectomy. No local luteolytic action was observed as found in other experimental species." @default.
