- W2009402685 abstract "Glue ear’ is a descriptive term used for that type of exudative otitis media in which the exudate filling the middle ear, the mastoid cells and the Eustachian tube is so viscid and sticky, as to resemble glue. It is a common and important cause of deafness, especially in childhood. A recent survey from the North of England (Watson, 1969) has shown that in five-year-old school children deafness found by audio-metric screening tests was due to exudative otitis media in 81% of cases. The deafness is of the conductive type and amounts to some 40 db for the speech frequencies. It is due to damping of the vibrations of the ossicular chain and to the loading of the round window by the exudate. The pathology of exudative otitis media has been well described by many authors (Senturia, 1963: Friedman, 1963: Sade, 1966). The essence of their findings and the consensus of opinion is, that the exudate of varying type of viscosity is produced in the middle ear itself and that the Eustachian tube is anatomically patent...." @default.
