According to this model, glucose increases the inflow rate and decreases the fractional outflow rate of calcium across the plasma membrane, but fails to affect the transfer rate constants for the intracellular translocation of calcium. 3. As a result of its effects on calcium transport across the plasma membrane, glucose increases the steady-state calcium content of both the postulated cytosolic and vacuolar pools. 4. The model is in fair agreement with experimental values for the net uptake and subcellular distribution of 45Ca in the islets. 5. The quantitative implications of the model in terms of NaCa counter transport, competition between the outflow of calcium and proton, and ATP expenditure are discussed." @default.
