The three are being nurtured by nonprofit conservation organizations. Coincidentally, each of these organizations was founded by a MacArthur fellow passionately interested in preserving more than our biological heritage. Two of the organizations have grassroots memberships devoted to saving the seeds of the past and the lore that goes with them; the third is a research and educational group that intends to introduce new crops based on historical ecosystems and, in the process, significantly change the way agriculture is conducted.
