Although early definitions of primary prevention included both disorder prevention and wellness building components, policy-making and funding organizations have come increasingly to focus on the relatively narrower objective of preventing serious psychological disorders. The case is made here that a wellness enhancement approach is eminently justifiable in its own right and may, in the last analysis, have as much or more to contribute to disorder prevention as specific risk-driven, disorder prevention, approaches. Research evidence is cited in support of this possibility and key elements of a broad-gauge, life-span-wellness-enhancement approach are outlined skeletally.
