- W2009944304 abstract "The uptake of ribonuclease and cytochrome c from solution by living Amoeba proteus was studied using iodine 131-labelled protein. The uptake is slow until a certain minimum protein concentration is reached. The uptake then markedly increases. The uptake curve reaches a maximum within 30 minutes and then remains at a constant level. For external concentrations of 0.001, 0.01 and 0.1 mg/ml RNase the maximum uptake was 0.05, 1.9 and 6.8 γ RNase/1000 amoebae. Half of the protein, at a level of 8 γ/1000 amoebae, will come off the amoebae during a 3-hour treatment in distilled water. Inhibitors, the extremes of pH, and low temperature do not affect the observed uptake during the first few minutes of treatment, but after this short initial period the uptake decreases markedly or completely stops. To explain these observations, a detailed hypothesis is advanced which involves both the binding of protein molecules to the external membrane of the amoeba and the subsequent ingestion of membrane by an active process presumed to be pinocytosis." @default.
