- W2010018250 abstract "Phosphorites of varying morphologies, including unconsolidated phosphorites of Recent age, concretionary and pelletal varieties and fish debris, which are known to be > 0.7 Ma old, occur in the Recent sediments of the Namibian shelf. All types of phosphorite consist of carbonate-fluorapatite with a varying admixture of terrigenous and biogenous impurities, especially diatomal opal which is abundant in the unconsolidated phosphorites. The relationship between F and Co2−3 in the carbonate-fluorapatite, on a mole basis, indicates that CO2−3 substitutes for PO3−4 on a one to one basis. The FP2O5 ratios of most consolidated phosphorites are low and suggest some substitution of OH− for F−, which can also occur in some Recent phosphorites. Unlike K, Mg is present in the consolidated phosphorites. Of the minor elements Ba, Ce, Cu, La, Mo, Nb, Ni, Rb, Sr, U, Y, Zn and Zr, all except Rb, Nb and possibly Cu show evidence of substitution for Ca in the apatite structure. Element/Al ratios and minor-element abundances relative to P2O5 show that Ba, Ni, Sr and U are incorporated into the unconsolidated phosphorites. However, phosphorite concretions show further enrichments in Ce, Mo, Y, Zn and Zr, whereas pelletal phosphorites show the greatest enrichment in La. Both Ce/La and La/Y ratios, calculated on aluminosilicate-free basis, show large variations in the different phosphorites. The origin of the phosphorites is believed to be the result of the diagenetic precipitation of phosphorus within sediments derived from planktonic organic P from the overlying waters. The patterns of major and minor elements can be reasonably explained by the different environmental conditions under which the phosphorites are formed." @default.
