- W2010020835 abstract "Background and significance Vohra and her colleagues (Vohra, 2007) recently performed a systematic review of the literature to document adverse events (AE) associated with pediatric spinal manipulative therapy. Over a period of 100 years and using 8 databases, they found 14 articles documenting AE with SMT. Ten of the 14 cases were associated with chiropractic SMT. To contribute to evidence-based practice, we performed a practice-based research survey to examine the safety and effectiveness of chiropractic SMT. Material and methods This study was approved by the IRB of Life University, Atlanta, GA, USA. The parental survey examined their gender, age and level of education. We asked the respondents for their child's gender, age and reason for chiropractic care. Furthermore, we asked for treatment-associated improvements, aggravations and complications. Results A total of 239 parents (222 females; 16 males; 1 not indicated) completed the survey. The average age was 35.58 years. Their educational levels were: Doctorate ( N =7), Masters ( N =29); baccalaureate ( N =73), Some College ( N =61), Certification ( N =35), High School ( N =26) and Some High School ( N =3). The children consisted of 119 females and 113 males (7 not indicated). Their average age was 6.15 years. A majority ( N =131) presented for “wellness care.” Of 125 patients with presenting complaints, the most common were MSK disorders (46%), birth trauma (7.2%), otitis media (8.0%), neurological disorders (7.2%), colic (4.9%) and personality disorder (5.7%). Only 2 patients reported aggravations as neck and knee soreness from 1735 visits. Improvements were reported in 115 of 125 patients with chief complaints. Forty-eight parents indicated unexpected improvements. The most common reported were improved sleep, improved attitude/demeanor and relief of cold symptoms. Discussion Similar to adults, pediatric patients present to the chiropractor for MSK conditions in addition to the common ailments of childhood (i.e., colic, enuresis, etc.). According to parents, chiropractic care is effective in addressing their children's complaints in addition to unexpected benefits from chiropractic SMT. AE documented are minor and insignificant in frequency. Conclusion This practice-based research study provides supporting evidence on the safety and effectiveness of pediatric chiropractic." @default.
