- W2010080329 abstract "Abstract The persistence of bacteria after invasion of animal tissue appears to be related to phase of growth, virulence and number of the organisms ingested. Actively growing S. enteritidis (log phase) were able to establish themselves in the spleen, liver and blood of mice only when their numbers were approximately 108. Fewer cells (103) or cells in accelerated death phase regardless of their numbers were not able to establish themselves within the organs of the test animals examined. The act of bruising and the accumulation of blood and fluid within the chicken muscles played an important role in the rate of growth and proliferation of S. aureus and S. epidermidis in experimentally infected poultry bruises. The data obtained in this investigation also showed that bruising affected the microenvironment of the tissues as evidenced by the changes in LDH and MDH enzyme activities. These changes were affected by whether or not the tissue was bruised, the type and number of organisms present, and the duration of infection. Both LDH and MDH enzymes exhibited similar activities under identical conditions. The persistence of bacteria in animals’ tissues is a function of the organism, itself, and the microenvironment in which it is placed." @default.
