- W2010088350 abstract "Neuronal degeneration in the lateral geniculate bodies of cats was induced by unilateral ablation of the visual cortex and bilateral enucleation. Four months later, the neurons had disappeared almost completely from the lateral geniculate ipsilateral to the cortical ablation, and there was only slight mesenchymal reaction. The water, sodium, potassium and chloride contents were determined in fresh samples of lateral geniculate bodies which were normal, contained transneuronal degeneration (contralateral to cortical lesion), or contained both transneuronal and retrograde degeneration (ipsilateral to cortical lesion). Considered in relation to the small interstitial spaces seen in electron micrographs, the data indicate that the concentrations of chloride and sodium in the neuroglia are high, but that the concentration of potassium is about the same as in neurons. Such findings are compatible with the view that neuroglia cells are low-voltage cells containing some cations not present as free ions." @default.
