- W2010089849 abstract "In order to ascertain whether any component of the cosmic radiation at high elevations might be of solar origin, a series of balloon-flights was made. The intensity of the radiation was measured by single Geiger counters, the impulses being scaled down about 50:1 and then automatically transmitted to the receiving station on the ground by short-wave radio. Flights were made both during the day and during the night. An arrangement was employed to cause the flight to level off at a high elevation. On one flight, while the instrument was floating at 66,000 feet, an intense solar flare took place. No change in intensity of the cosmic radiation was observed, up to levels of about half a meter of water-equivalent below the top of the atmosphere attained on these flights, either between day and night, or coincident with the flare, as large as the experimental error of about two per cent. The observations lead to the conclusion that there is no penetrating radiation originating in the Sun, which is capable of penetrating as much as five per cent of the Earth's atmosphere. Analysis of the negative result showed that if there were any component of gamma rays originating in the Sun, either under normal circumstances or at the time of a flare, these must have a mass absorption-coefficient of between 0.1 and 25 per gram. Any radiation in the form of charged particles emanating from the Sun must lie in the energy-range below 109 electron-volts, an energy too low to be able to penetrate the Earth's magnetic field in the latitudes (50° north geomagnetic) where the observations were made." @default.
