- W2010090078 abstract "Nitroblue tetrazolium (N.B.T.) is an interesting compound which is of value in the study of neutrophil physiology. It is useful in the study of phagocytosis and factors effecting phagocytosis, since its addition to blood results in the formation of a particulate object of phagocytosis, while at the same time the dye, which is complexed to this precipitate, functions as a visible marker of the completion of this act. Hopes that the N.B.T. test would be a useful discriminant in clinical management have not been fulfilled because it measures a response to disease which is not specific to bacterial infection and because it is dependent upon a normal phagocytic capacity of neutrophils. However, the stimulated N.B.T. test may be a valuable index of the functional capacity of neutrophils. The dye may also be used to measure the ability of neutrophils to kill microbes because of the close association between microbicidal function and dye reduction. The quantitative N.B.T. test and simple, qualitative, screening tests are undoubtedly of value in the diagnosis of C.G.D." @default.
