- W2010096178 abstract "Increasing concern over the potential adverse human health effects associated with exposure to toxic chemicals released to the environment and burgeoning legal requirements that mandate choice of disposal alternatives other than land disposal have contributed to the development of alternate technologies for waste treatment and disposal. The principal technology that has been increasingly employed is incineration on land sites and recently to a decreasing degree at sea. Waste which is burned in normal waste incinerators is usually generated from individual households and apartments, service industries, shops, supermarkets, light business areas etc. and contains varying quantities of metals and acid forming elements. During incineration up to 35 % of metals in a hazardous waste stream can be emitted to the atmosphere. Potentially hazardous constituents in the stack emissions as well as in bottom ash from both hazardous waste and municipal waste are metals which are carcinogenic and genotoxic as well as affecting reproductive development. These include: arsenic, cadmium, mercury, lead and nickel. Refuse incineration is a major source of atmospheric cadmium in the United States and United Kingdom. Additionally, a comparison of metals produced from land based and ocean incineration techniques will be presented as well as a consideration of pyrolysis of sewage sludge." @default.
