- W2010135420 abstract "1. Both protein synthesis and chondroitin sulfate synthesis in embryonic chick bone in vitro appear to be limited by amino acid transport: the stimulation by blood serum of amino acid transport is accompanied by stimulation of amino acid and sulfate incorporation; these effects are not seen if the stimulation of amino acid transpor is prevented by the presence of ouabain or by the absence of either sodium or potassium from the incubation medium. 2. The serum factor which stimulates amino acid transport by embryonic bone in vitro is low or absent in serum from hypophysectomized rats. Injection of bovine growth hormone in these rats produces a temporary increase in the activity of the factor. We think it probable that the serum amino acid transport factor is identical to the serum sulfation factor of Salmon and Daughaday. 3. The metabolic accumulation of diffusible potassium by embryonic chick bone requires sodium and is inhibited by ouabain but is not effected by serum. The accumulation of a non-diffusible potassium fraction is stimulated by serum and is inhibited, after a delay, by puromycin. In these respects, the non-diffusible potassium fraction resembles the non-diffusible sulfate fraction which corresponds to chondroitin sulfate." @default.
