- W2010236479 abstract "Differences in language use are shown for early stages as well as in a few studies in preclinical stages of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Cognitive decline affects language use. However which differences show up early and can these be early symptoms or an expression of cognitive reserve? There are differences in parts of speech use in early AD. It has been described in several studies that patients use less nouns and more pronouns than healthy controls. In this study the parts of speech use in preclinical stages and the long term changes are observed. We used semi standardised biographic interviews of the Interdisciplinary Longitudinal Study on Adult Development and Aging (ILSE). Subjects were observed at three times (t1: 1993/94, t2: 1997/98, t3: 2005/07). The analysed subsample (n=16,16,10) includes two corpora: Interviews with subjects who developed AD at t3 (t3AD) and interviews with well-matched healthy controls. Interviews were transcribed. Following we used a part-of-speech tagger (Tree Tagger) to assign parts of speech to words. Differences between corpora with regards to parts of speech were calculated with log likelihood ratio. Contradictory to results in early AD, our results show overuse of nouns (p<0.001) in preclinical stages for t1 and t2. However the use of nouns decreases in course for t3AD (p<0.01) and there's no significant difference in controls. Our results for pronouns in preclinical stages are accordingly to the known results in early stages of AD. There is an overuse of pronouns in t3AD (p<0.0001) in comparison to controls as well as in course (p<0.01). For controls the pronoun use decreases in course (p<0.001). Some differences in parts of speech use can be seen in preclinical stages up to twelve years before diagnosis. The decrease in noun use may emerge later with the beginning of AD whereas pronoun overuse can be shown for preclinical stages and increases in course. This could be due to more complex mechanisms required in reference production which could be a very early symptom or a hint to language use as a marker for cognitive reserve." @default.
