- W2010272135 abstract "Abstract The dipole giant resonance is studied in nuclei with unfilled shells. It is shown that, in comparison with closed shell nuclei, there exists an additional effect which seriously influences the form of the giant resonance. This effect consists in two or more particle- hole pairs being excited indirectly by means of the residual forces between these configurations and the dipole ones. It is shown that the most effective are those two- pair configurations which correspond to the excitation in which one nucleon is lifted into the neighbouring shell whereas the other is only displaced in the same shell. The inclusion of these configurations generates a number of states, each of which takes away some dipole strength from the Brown-Bolsterli dipole states. The number of these states, their energies and strength distribution as influenced by this effect are calculated for C 12 . A relation is derived between the width of the giant resonance and the number of valence nucleons. The influence of the one-quantum-two-pair configurations on the form of the giant resonance is calculated approximately for Ne 20 ." @default.
