- W2010358865 abstract "Reviewed by: Built to Win: Inside Stories and Leadership Strategies from Baseball’s Winningest GM Lee Lowenfish John Schuerholz with Larry Guest. Built to Win: Inside Stories and Leadership Strategies from Baseball’s Winningest GM. New York: Warner Books, 2006. 272 pp. Cloth, $24.95. John Schuerholz has arguably been the most successful general manager in baseball history. At the helm of the Atlanta Braves since the end of the 1990 season, he has presided over an unprecedented fourteen consecutive National League Eastern Division championships. (As NINE readers undoubtedly recall, there was no postseason in 1994 because of the lengthy strike.) Although the Braves were hovering near .500 at press time in late May 2006, it would be rash to count them out too early in their quest for a fifteenth consecutive National League East divisional title. That Schuerholz's Atlanta teams have been unable to win more than one World Series does not take away from the amazing period of championship contention he has overseen. At the age of sixty-five, John Schuerholz may be nearing retirement. So, [End Page 134] after years of being urged to write a book, he finally decided to sit down with retired Orlando Sentinel sports columnist Larry Guest and tell the story of his remarkable success. Built to Win is probably the first book released by a major publisher that focuses on the life of a front office man instead of a big star on the field. It opens with the story of a trade that never happened: the Braves' near-acquisition of Barry Bonds from the Pirates during spring training 1992. Pittsburgh ownership grew skittish and killed a deal that would have sent to the Pirates the journeyman reliever Alejandro Pena, the utterly forgettable utility man Keith Mitchell, and the ubiquitous player to be named later. (Of course at the end of the 1992 season Bonds would head to San Francisco as a free agent for his rendezvous with fame and infamy.) In Schuerholz's second chapter, he takes issue with the thesis of Moneyball, Michael Lewis's best-selling book, which lauds Oakland Athletics GM Billy Beane for seeking pitchers who can induce groundball outs and hitters who have high on-base percentages. Schuerholz demurs, arguing that, while stats are never ignored by the Braves organization, you can never underestimate the judgment and intuition of your scouts and developers. In an apt metaphor, Schuerholz refers to the scouts as the ones who find the marble and to the developers as the men who chisel the raw material into Major League works of art. The Braves' boss respects the intelligence of Billy Beane, and Schuerholz's story of how the Braves traded for A's ace pitcher Tim Hudson after the 2004 season is one of the inside tales that will attract readers. That Hudson was a native of Phenix City, Alabama (only two hours from Atlanta), and grew up a Braves fan was an advantage that the front office capitalized on, although it was by no means an easy negotiation. I don't think that collaborator Larry Guest is related to Edgar Guest, but Schuerholz certainly had to feel at home telling his story to a writer with the same last name as the greeting-card bard. Throughout his life, Schuerholz has found release and satisfaction in writing home-spun verses that he sprinkles throughout Built to Win. One example comes from his early days as he was working his way up the ladder of the Kansas City Royals front office. After serving as a spring training driver for Jack McKeon, the Royals general manager at the time, Schuerholz composed a verse that he undoubtedly kept to himself: I and My are words oft used. By those who are themselves confused; Why won't their super egos trust, The use of words like We and Us? In a chapter entitled Man Bites Dog! Teacher Quits for Less Money, Schuerholz tells the story of how he entered baseball. He was born into a prominent athletic family. His father was known as the Bob Cousy of Baltimore and his grandfather once coached a basketball team made up of his sons. Schuerholz was working..." @default.
