- W2010450895 abstract "Detailed characterization of synthetic humic substances (melanoidins synthesized from amino acids and glucose or galactose) by alkaline potassium permanganate oxidation has been conducted to deduce criteria upon which to test the melanoidin-derived structure of natural humic substances. Volatile degradation products (formic, acetic, oxalic, malonic and succinic acids) account for 20–40% (on carbon base) of melanoidins, oxalic acid comprising 71–96% of the total volatiles. Higher molecular weight KMnO4 degradation products (aliphatic C4C6α,ω-dicarboxylic acids, aliphatic C4C8 tricarboxylic acids and benzene mono-to-tetracarboxylic acids) have been tentatively identified by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Although yields of the higher molecular weight degradation products from melanoidins are low (0.1–0.2% of melanoidins on carbon base), these degradation products reflect amino acids and carbohydrates that were used for the synthesis of the melanoidins." @default.
