- W2010477023 abstract "Several points should be made regarding the Schoenfeldt-Lissitz paper (1974). 1) Schoenfeldt and Lissitz have taken our general comment (Novick & Jackson, 1974) that moderator variable methods are typically unsuccessful when subgrouping follows from a blind fishing expedition or data dredging [p. 79] as applying to their study. They then clearly demonstrate that their subgroupings had a solid theoretical basis. The fact that these subgroupings did not prove useful is thus even more noteworthy. 2) Schoenfeldt and Lissitz (1974) claim that we point out that inferences developed from the Bayesian m-group procedure were not, in general, meaningfully better than those developed from the appropriate classical procedure [p. 89]. This was not our conclusion and their statement is misleading. We, in fact, point out only that with apriori omniscience it is usually possible to find a strong classical model that will work as well as the bigger and more encompassing Bayesian model. We, however, have confessed our own lack of apriori omniscience and suggested that this was a strong argument for the bigger Bayesian model. Those who never err in selecting a model will probably have no need for our methods. 3) The purpose of our paper was to demonstrate the usefulness of Bayesian m-group regression when within-group sample sizes are small. We believe we have done this and apparently Lissitz and Schoenfeldt (1974), and Schoenfeldt and Lissitz (1974), have not chosen to challenge this point. As a general comment I should say that I think this interchange has been very useful in clarifying important issues. Sharp professional debate is required if we are to get to the heart of these issues. Neither m-group regression nor moderator variable methods are universally useful, but perhaps the discussion here will help practitioners decide when one or the other may be useful (or useless). If so, the AERJ editor should be commended for having tactfully managed this debate. I hope that we have put on a sufficiently good show for him. As for Messrs. Lissitz and Schoenfeldt, I" @default.
