- W2010492500 abstract "When weanling albino rats were fed a diet containing 10 per cent of skim milk powder, up to 100 per cent of the animals died between the 30th and 60th day of trial from dietary liver necrosis. 100 per cent of the animals survived for the 120-day feeding trial, when the ration contained the corresponding quantity of fresh skim milk. It was observed that generally roll-dried skim milk powder was more necrosis-causing than spray-dried one. Furthermore, the growth of the animals was retarded by feeding dried skim milk in place of fresh one. By variation of the experimental conditions is was demonstrated that these phenomena were not caused by the animals or by an inadequate composition or preparation of the ration, but by the drying method of the skim milk. Skim milk drying is important for the nutritional situation of the whole world. It cannot be given up. Experiments showed that under certain conditions dry milk powders can be produced which do not cause necrosis. Finally, the author discusses the possibilities of preventing the necrotic effect by certain additives. Necrosis can also be prevented by increasing the amount of skim milk powder in the ration. This proves that no toxis substance (at least no acute toxic substance) results from drying, but only a deficiency." @default.
