- W2010509548 abstract "Abstract A regenerative liquid junction solar cell has been operated with concomitant reduction of nitrite ions to ammonia and hydroxylamine. The cells used a polysulfide electrolyte and cadmium selenide or cadmium selenide-telluride thin film photoanodes, without an external bias, with metal or graphite cathodes. Nitrate ions were not reduced to ammonia under these conditions. Increasing amounts of nitrite in the electrolyte resulted in the production of larger quantities of ammonia. This reduction of ammonia already occurs to a small extent in the dark, as a thermal reaction in homogeneous solution, but is strongly enhanced under illuminations. A substantial part of this reaction is photochemical, occurring even in the absence of electrodes." @default.
