• W2010554371 abstract "Synopsis * AC protonic polarization effects in borax were studied by dielectric measurements between 1 Hz and 300 kHz. At very low frequencies a conductivity loss was observed corresponding with a resistivity ρ = 3.8 × 10 6 ohm.m. The rest of the dispersion could be resolved into two overlapping contributions I and II with relative dielectric constants changing from κ′ s = 575 at very low frequencies to κ′ ∞ = 4 at high frequencies. Loss mechanism I was ascribed to mobile protons and Macdonald's theory of AC space-charge polarization was applied to calculate the mobility μ and the proton concentration N. Loss mechanism II was attributed to proton displacements over molecular distances. DC polarization effects were studied at constant field strengths between 200 and 8 × 10 4 V/m. The currents all showed an exponential decrease with a characteristic time τ = 300 sec, independent of the applied voltage and followed by a much slower decrease with a characteristic time τ ′ = 2 × 10 4 sec. This was ascribed to a finite rate of discharge of protons and space-charge formation. From, space-charge limited currents the same mobility was calculated as from the dielectric measurements. The values μ = 1.8 × 10 −4 m 2 /Vs and N = 10 16 m −3 are consistent with all the experimental observations." @default.
