- W2010602191 abstract "There was a time when Russian historians outside Soviet Union were much more prepared than they are today to speak about the Russian working class, in ways reminiscent of their Soviet colleagues, as one mass of men (they had yet to discover women) who were growing in cohesion and consciousness as they moved into larger and larger factories, breaking their ties with countryside, and becoming ever more politically active under leadership of Social Democracy. The last two decades have seen a kind of analytical and interpretive decomposition of that working class as our information and understanding of variety of workers and their activities grew. Instead of a relatively homogeneous class of workers, historians now differentiate among workers by industry, by size of firm, by location, skills, wage levels, literacy, stazh (length of service) in work force, gender, age, closeness to or distance from peasantry, not to mention degree of political consciousness and party or union affiliation. Even within same factory or railway labor force, as William G. Rosenberg, Steve Smith, and others have shown so persuasively, there are distinctions to be made between various shops (tsekh?) and occupational groups.1 For two intense days of discussion and debate nearly two dozen scholars, who collectively make up greater part of first generation of western historians interested in social history of Russian workers, met in conference at Univer sity of California, Berkeley, to read and reflect on twelve papers on formative and revolutionary experiences of Russia's workers. Such a small and dedicated group gathering sixty years after subjects of their investigations had made two revolutions in less than a year reminded one of Trotsky's musing that delegates to anti-war Zimmerwald conference of 1915 themselves joked about fact that half a century after founding of first International, it was still possible to seat all internationalists in four coaches.2 Three long tables sufficed for Russian labor historians. The quality of their work notwithstanding, field of" @default.
