Double immunodiffusion of anti-E4 against E4 and L4 produced a pattern of fusion indicating serological identity between isolectins. Double immunodiffusion of anti-L4 against E4 and L4 produced a pattern of partial intersection indicating the presence of L4-specific antibody in the anti-L4 antiserum. The nonimmunological precipitation of serum glycoproteins with E4 was eliminated with 1 mm EDTA. The antibody fraction specific for the isolectin L subunit was purified from anti-L4 antiserum by immunoadsorption to E3L1-agarose and used in a radioimmunoassay for the L subunit. After correcting for cross-reactivity for L subunit, the anti-E4 antiserum was used in a radioimmunoassay for the isolectin E subunit. Both radioimmunoassays confirm the subunit structures proposed for the phytohemagglutinin isolectins as E4, E3L1, E2L2, E1L3, and L4." @default.
