- W2010656118 abstract "There is now consensus that Hodgkin’s disease is a clonal proliferation of B cells. In the United States, there are around 7,000 new cases diagnosed each year, and an incidence of 3 per 100,000 population. It is characterized by a bimodal age distribution with the first peak at ages 15 to 35 and a second peak at about age 65, with a male-to-female ratio of 1.4:1. According to the World Health Organization classification, nodular lymphocyte predominant Hodgkin’s lymphoma has become a separate entity from classic Hodgkin’s lymphoma (CHL). 1 Jaffe E.S. Harris N.L. Diebold J. et al. World Health Organization classification of neoplastic disease of the hematopietic and lymphoid tissues. A progress report. Am J Clin Pathol. 1999; 111: S8 PubMed Google Scholar This distinction occurred in the light of morphologic, phenotypic, genotypic, and clinical findings. CHL includes the following subtypes: nodular sclerosing, mixed cellularity, lymphocyte depleted, and the diffuse form of lymphocyte rich. The diagnosis is made on the identification of Hodgkin’s cells (Reed-Sternberg cells) within an appropriate cellular background infiltrate, consisting of small lymphocytes, eosinophils, neutrophils, histocytes, plasma cells, and fibroblasts. Typically, Hodgkin’s cells are CD45 and CD3 negative and CD30 and CD15 positive, and about 25% are also CD20 positive in immunohistochemical studies. Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) studies reveal viral integration in the genome of CHL tumor cells in a varying proportion of patients (20% to 80%) depending on histotype. 2 Vassallo J. Brousset P. Knecht H. et al. Detection of Epstein-Barr virus in Hodgkins disease. Appl Immunohistochem. 1993; 1: 213 Google Scholar However, the significance of EBV in the pathogenesis of Hodgkin’s lymphoma remains unclear. Here we focus on CHL, which comprises about 95% of all Hodgkin’s lymphoma cases, and review the current approach to Hodgkin’s lymphoma management and present a case report." @default.
