- W2010816567 abstract "Abstract The fungi Metarrhizium anisopliae, Beauveria bassiana , and Spicaria rileyi were tested in the laboratory, and the first two fungi also were tested in the field for infectivity to larvae of the cowpea curculio, Chalcodermus aeneus . Spore powders collected from laboratory-grown fungus cultures or a commercial formulation of B. bassiana were applied topically to the insects or mixed into the sand or soil pupation substrates. High spore concentrations of S. rileyi (987 × 10 9 /g in substrate) afforded no control of the insect after 14 days, but M. anisopliae (111 × 10 9 /g in substrate) and B. bassiana (186 × 10 9 /g in substrate) killed 100% of the larvae in 6 and 7 days, respectively. Furthermore, M. anisopliae which was allowed to dry out in soil and then kept in the air-dried state for 40 days was still able to infect newly introduced larvae and caused 100% mortality in 6 days. Only B. bassiana was pathogenic to adults. In a small field test using treated soil in containers, M. anisopliae killed 88% of the test insects in 7 days." @default.
