- W2010912002 abstract "Abstract During a study of the trace element composition of thermal waters in Iceland, gallium, germanium, iron, molybdenum, titanium and vanadium were found in microgram quantities in most of the 135 samples that were analysed, but chromium, cobalt, nickel and zinc only in a few samples, mostly of acid water, and traces of lead in some samples. Bismuth, cadmium and copper were not found. The concentrations of the trace elements in the waters can often be related to the amount of some other dissolved solids, pH, temperature and mineral solubilities. The concentrations of germanium are considered to be governed by the solubility of Ca germanate and molybdenum concentrations by the solubility of molybdenite. The stability of molybdenite increases with increasing hydrogen sulphide activity and decreasing pH. The positive relation between the concentrations of molybdenum and silica is taken to indicate complexing of molybdenum with silica. The trace element composition of thermal waters associated with acid volcanics, basaltic rocks, and elastic shallow water marine sediments are very similar for similar temperatures and pH's. The concentrations of all the trace elements found in the thermal waters are considered to be adequately accounted for by leaching from the rocks by the thermal water. None of the trace elements occur in sufficiently high concentrations in the thermal waters that would suggest that they could be extracted economically." @default.
