- W2010934823 abstract "Samples of urine from 72 cows, four bulls, three bullocks, and a heifer calf were examined. Attempts to extract pregnandiol yielded small quantities of impure sterol containing neither cholesterol nor oestrogenic substances. In the case of the cow, the weighed quantities of the residue varied from 0'8 mg. to 8'0 mg. per litre of urine. The quantity extracted from a sample gave no indication as to whether the cow was pregnant or not, nor, in the case of a pregnant cow, did it indicate the duration of pregnancy. The observation that small quantiries of residue occurred in the urines of six anoestrous cows and in four bulls, while minute amounts (less than 0'1 mg. per litre) were present in three bullocks and a heifer calf, would suggest that a source of pregnandiol, other than progesterone elaborated by the corpus luteum, exists in the body of the cow. The findings of previous workers point to desoxycorticosterone from the adrenal cortex as a second source. In slaughtered cows, the amount of residue extracted from a sample of urine could not be correlated with the histological appearance of the endometrium, nor was there any evident relationship between the amount of residue extracted and the weight of the corpus luteum. The results of Allen-Daisy tests carried out on urine from 28 pregnant and five non-pregnant cows, and of modified Cuboni tests on urine from 13 pregnant cows, showed that the Allen-Daisy test can only be regarded as reliable after the 140th day of pregnancy: the Cuboni test is not reliable in any respect." @default.
