- W2011029426 abstract "Abstract Contrast Enhanced MRI (CE-MRI) is a relatively new technique in clinical use for Breast cancer detection and classification. CE-MRI, besides detecting morphological information of the lesion, can provide dynamic information on the contrast medium behavior, related to the intensity of MRI signal over time. Four different types of Signal Intensity/Time (SI/T) curves, helping to distinguish four types of lesion (Ia, Ib, II, III), have recently been developed. According to this approach, we have realized a new software environment, DICOM compatible, that is able to automatically load a complete breast-MRI study (6 time-series, about 30 scan-planes each) and provide, after registration, the subtraction of all the images in each series to the corresponding ones in the first series (pre-contrast). The software supplies 3D-MIP reconstruction for each subtracted series and automatically scans them to provide a False Color Map (FCM) for each scan plane, by comparing the SI/T evolution of each point with the four lesion types described above (different hues for each type), and modulating color brightness with the earliness of the enhancement peak. The FCMs can be superimposed to the original images and assembled in a 3D-MIP-FCM, with the possibility of switching between the 3D visualization and the plane providing maximum color intensity in a selected area. We tested our software on 36 patients with both malignant and benign lesions, obtaining an excellent correlation between the FCMs and the ROI-based SI/T curve analysis performed by an expert radiologist, with the advantage of a fast, semi-automatic and operator independent procedure. The method provides quick and easily interpretable images for detection and characterization of breast lesions.
