- W201108984 abstract "This chapter discusses the role of biosensors in the rapid, sensitive, and selective microbiological analysis of foodborne pathogens. The first portion deals with a brief definition of biosensors. This includes the role of sensors, analytes, and transducers in the identification and characterization of various microorganisms. Tables briefly present the types of biosensing entities, the analytes that they detect, and the recognition signal that is produced. The second table lists the use of whole cells as sensors, the analyte, and the recognition signal. Another table lists the transducers, the instrumentation that is used, and the type of measurements for transducers. The text will define all of these areas in greater detail. Flow injection and online systems employing biosensors will be illustrated by a table and then discussed in greater detail. Nanoparticles have entered the biosensor realm both as sensors and transducers. The increased sensitivity of reactions when gold and silver nanoparticles are used is discussed. Multiplexed biosensor instrumentation involving microarrays are mentioned. Caution concerning the use of nanoparticles with regard to toxicity and comments on biosensor shelf life and stability are also included." @default.
