- W2011123896 abstract "Numerical methods are becoming increasingly prominent in the area of magnetic field calculations. Regions with a complex geometric form and differing material properties are difficult to investigate analytically with sufficient accuracy. The increasing capacity of modern computers allows the use of numerical field calculation methods under very realistic conditions. This paper deals with the most important principles involved in the derivation of the equations and their solution. The mathematical formulation of the boundary conditions is handled briefly and the description of the solution with vector and scalar potentials is mentioned. The transition to difference equations and finite-elements methods is described. The advantages and disadvantages of iterative and direct solutions to the algebraic equations are investigated. Examples illustrate the difference between stationary, non-stationary and quasi-stationary conditions. The material properties, in particular the non-linear B(H) function, assume an important role in determining computing time. The steps in the calculation and the evaluation of the results are elucidated through examples." @default.
