- W2011129503 abstract "A discussion is given on the relative importance of the Joule and frictional heating in the polar ionosphere. It is shown that in a steady state situation when the ion velocity is constant, these two heating terms are equal and can be interchanged. In a time varying situation, however, the frictional heat exchange includes an extra term which can be very large in the presence of time varying electric fields fluctuating with frequencies lower than twice the ion gyrofrequency in the E-region. This enhancement is in particular strong above the peak of the Pedersen conductivity. It is further argued that recent observations by space probes of such fluctuating electric fields indicate the presence of a frictional heat source in the auroral ionosphere that can be comparable to the Joule heating rate. This must be accounted for in the energy budget of polar ionosphere-atmosphere interaction processes." @default.
