He then went on to admit that the performance had given him a most profound surprise. Instead of a group of splendid show tunes, loosely strung together with unsatisfactory recitative and transition passages, delineating an unbelievable story about unconvincing, offensively stereotyped black characters, Starr found Gershwin's work powerful drama composed by skilled craftsman real opera by real opera composer. So moved was he by Porgy and Bess that his experience drove him to one of the most demonstrative of musicological acts: the writing and presentation of scholarly paper.'
