The most numerous filaments measure 8–10 nm in width and must consist of spectrin while 5- to 6-nm-wide filaments may consist of spectrin or actin. Nodular structures 16–40 nm in diameter are situated at points where the filaments join to form the network. As the pH is reduced, the cytoskeleton contracts and is eventually transformed into an exceedingly coarse network. A similar change can be induced by treating the cytoskeletons with poly-l-lysine and it is concluded that a low pH can influence the organization of the cytoskeleton directly by diminishing the net negative charge on the spectrin molecules." @default.
