Zinc is a trace element that stabilizes membranes and interacts with other bivalent cations. It is a compound consisting mostly of metalloproteins. It exerts insulin-like effects and increases erythrocyte deformability. Exercise has short-term effects on zinc that can be described as a shift in body zinc reparation, with a general increase in serum zinc. The chronic effect of exercise is the reduction of serum zinc (fig 1), reflecting a depletion in the body's zinc stores with a parallel decrease in fitness. Recent reports of disturbances in both rheologic and metabolic response to exercise in hypozincemic subjects support the hypothesis that zinc deficiencies disturb the body's adaptation to exercise because they induce alterations in blood rheology, which in turn impairs aerobic glucose metabolism." @default.
