- W2012042783 abstract "The chemical composition, digestibility in vitro (measured using three methods), and digestibility and energy values in vivo of a total of 62 wheat, 52 barley and five oat straws harvested from farms throughout England were studied. All straws had a very high cell-wall content with mean neutral detergent fibre (NDF) contents of 806, 809 and 732 g kg−1 dry matter (DM) for wheat, barley and oat straw, respectively. Cell-wall content appeared to be influenced by geographical location, but not by cereal species or variety. Cereal species had a significant effect on the content of calcium, phosphorus, sodium, potassium and sulphur, but not on magnesium. In most cases, however, the species effect appeared to be considerably influenced by the higher values in the small number of oat straws. Digestible organic matter (DOMD) content in vitro showed considerable variability within cereals with all three methods used. These were the rumen fluid method of Tilley and Terry, pepsin-cellulase and NDF-cellulase. The pepsin-cellulase method produced consistently lower DOMD contents than the other two methods, the mean values for wheat being 417, 367 and 170 g kg−1 DM for rumen fluid, NDF-cellulase and pepsin-cellulase, respectively. The mean (±SD) DOMD contents in vivo were 420 (48.8), 448 (49.9) and 479 (63.7) g kg−1 DM for the wheat, barley and oat straws, respectively. Some of the variability within species could be accounted for by variety, but there was considerable overlap between species. The within-species variability in metabolisable energy (ME) content was greater than for DOMD with mean values (±SD) of 6.0 (1.10), 6.5 (1.21) and 7.0 (1.14) MJ kg−1 DM for wheat, barley and oats, respectively. ME content was not significantly influenced by cereal species. It is concluded that the agronomic factors recorded in this study do not provide an adequate means of assessing the nutritive value of cereal straws and the provision of a reliable laboratory method of evaluation is essential." @default.
