- W2012109713 abstract "The female genital tract mucosa is the main access for sexually transmittedpathogens and is also the site of development of the semi-allogenic embryo. To dealwith these functions, the immune system associated with the female genital mucosahas certain characteristics that differentiate it from the immune system associatedwith the gastrointestinal tract. The female sex hormones may interfere with theimmunological aspects of this system, and the distribution of cells distinguishesit from other mucosal sites. Also, in the female genital mucosa the organizedlymphoid areas as the Peyer’s patches in the intestine are missing, and the main typeof immunoglobulin found in cervical and vaginal secretions is IgG in contrast to thepredominant IgA in saliva, tears and other biological secretions. The purpose of thisreview is to present the key features already observed with respect to aspects of theimmune response in the female genital tract and highlight the impact of sexuallytransmitted diseases (STD) on this mucosal immune site." @default.
