Existing ecosystem science is ignored as ecologists plan restoration projects. The problem of detecting fish responses to habitat alterations is reviewed via linked issues: expectations, measures, variability, and scale. Habitat alterations directed at single species populations usually affect other ecosystem components. In the fish community, no single population is the reference point for detecting responses. A set of 15 alternate responses highlights the need for an array of ecological indicators if alternatives are to be distinguished. Potential measures are surveyed. Patterns and sources of spatial and temporal variability are identified. Integrative indicators such as production and community indices may be more suitable for detecting changes as they exhibit less variability. The spatial and temporal scales of ecosystem responses are usually greater than the scales of human interventions and assessment. Guidelines for designing assessments are recommended. Management actions are experiments and must be assessed as such. Learning requires systematic observation with replicates and controls. Restoration plans must focus more on ecosystems and less on preferred species. Given the scales of experimentation required, larger opportunities for useful science must be created by wider coordination, consultation, and cooperation. Les ecologistes qui planifient ces projets ne tiennent pas compte des connaissances actuelles sur les ecosystemes. Dans le present article, nous examinons le probleme que pose la detection des reactions des poissons aux modifications apportees a leur habitat, selon quatre points de vue interrelies: les attentes, les mesures, la variabilite et l'echelle. Les modifications d'habitat ayant pour cible les populations d'une seule espece ont generalement un effet sur les autres composantes de l'ecosysteme. La communaute ichtyenne, qui comprend plus d'une espece, sert de point de comparaison pour la detection des reactions. Un ensemble de 15 reactions possibles met en relief la necessite d'utiliser toute une gamme d'indicateurs ecologiques si on veut envisager plusieurs solutions distinctes. Nous passons en revue les mesures qui peuvent etre utilisees, puis nous relevons les types et les sources de variabilite spatiale et temporelle. Les indicateurs integrant plusieurs facteurs, comme les indices de production et de communaute, conviennent sans doute le mieux a la detection des changements, car ils sont moins sujets a varier. Par ailleurs, les echelles spatiale et temporelle qui caracterisent la reaction des ecosystemes sont generalement plus grandes que celles ou se font les interventions humaines et les evaluations. Nous proposons enfin des lignes directrices pour la conception des evaluations. Toute mesure d'amenagement constitue une experience et doit a ce titre faire l'objet d'une evaluation. Le progres des connaissances exige une observation systematique, avec repetitions et temoins. Les plans de restauration doivent porter davantage sur les ecosystemes et moins sur des especes qu'on entend privilegier. Etant donne les echelles auxquelles les experiences doivent etre menees, il faut multiplier les occasions de recherche utile en elargissant la coordination, la consultation et la cooperation.
