- W201214436 abstract "Several diseases are known in which snails act as intermediate hosts to the vectors. One of the most important affecting human beings is schistosomiasis or bilharziasis, while in the field of veterinary medicine fascioliasis is an outstanding example. Other diseases transmitted through the agency of snails include chlonorchiasis and opisthorchiasis. According to the World Health Organization (1953–1965), bilharziasis is one of the most widely spread parasitic diseases. Chemotherapeutic treatment of persons suffering from bilharziasis is problematic, due to the fact that only very few drugs are available which are capable of killing the schistosomes parasitizing in the human body and which, at the same time, are well tolerated by the human organism. Furthermore. the mode of infection involved in the transmission of bilharziasis completely precludes immunization against the disease, which means that in endemic areas, persons already cured of it by chemotherapy are constantly exposed to the risk of re-infection. Chemo-therapeutic measures are, therefore, only useful if they are allied with other measures, in particular biological or chemical methods directed towards controlling the intermediate hosts. The causative organisms of bilharziasis are schistosomes, the three most important species being Schistosoma mansoni, S. haematobium and S. japonicum. The intermediate hosts of S. mansoni and S. haematobium are water snails, and those of S. japonicum are amphibious snails." @default.
