- W201215144 abstract "If faculty and students are to fully integrate technology into higher education, we software publishers and hardware manufacturers must offer more convenient outlets for potential users to explore, evaluate and purchase already existing educational course software. Creating easier sampling opportunities and providing immediate fulfillment services for curriculum-based software programs are the reasons we developed the new interactive kiosk with a touch-sensitive screen that provides onsite access for faculty and students to test-drive, evaluate and purchase any of the more than 200 educational software programs in the Intellimation Higher Education Library for the Macintosh. Joint Development Effort The intellimation Library for the Macintosh is a joint-development project between Intellimation and Apple Computer, Inc. that began in 1990 when Apple began searching for a partner that not only distributed, but also published educational software. After reviewing more than 30 companies nationwide, Apple selected Intellimation to take over and expand what was formerly the Kinko's Academic Courseware Exchange. Apple looked to us to establish a new publishing model for educator-developed software, moving well beyond traditional distribution methods. Our new model incorporated several innovative projects including Courseware On Site. Apple felt we were particularly well-suited to establish this service because from the beginning, Intellimation has focused on using technology in education, rather than on the printed word as Kinko's did. Additionally, we were able to combine the disciplines of academic publishing--with its close attention to content and value--with a thorough understanding of the possibilities and benefits technology offers. Apple and Intellimation both believed that our curriculum-based software, which grows out of first-hand teaching experience and subject knowledge, had special value for classrooms. We also felt that if we could combine that value with our strong marketing support, we could facilitate communication among educators doing similar work; provide guidance on topics such as the most appropriate multimedia format for a particular application; and participate in forums, distribute information widely and generally do all we could to make the materials we publish readily available. Our goal to make the most innovative curriculum-based software easily accessible led us to develop Courseware On Site, an interactive forum by which faculty and students can see, sample and evaluate curriculum software programs prior to purchasing them. We tested our new concept using a CD-ROM-based courseware sampling system at approximately 100 campus sites throughout the United States. Cornell University was one of the pilot sites selected. A Software Sampling System As director of the Learning Technologies Program (LTP), a series of workshops sponsored by Apple to help faculty integrate technology in instruction, Carrie Regenstein elected to install the CD-ROM-based courseware sampling system in the Instructional Resource Center maintained by Cornell Information Technologies. According to Regenstein, the sytem made it very easy for faculty attending the LTP workshops to find out what software was available, and it provided them with new ideas and opportunities for using technology-based curriculum in classes. The service has since been extended to all Cornell faculty. To supplement the information we gained from pilot sites like Cornell, Intellimation conducted further research into faculty and student purchasing decisions. This research revealed that college bookstores played a key role in determining what course curriculum faculty members selected. Based on that information, we felt a bookstore would be the most logical location for Courseware On Site. Debut of the Kiosk This fall, following three years of research and testing, Intellimation installed the first free-standing Courseware On Site kiosk at the University of Southern California (USC) in Los Angeles. …" @default.
