- W2012163039 abstract "In this study, we used the method of finite element analysis to investigate the mechanical stiffness of single nanoscale helical springs with two different configurations—square and round—in order to answer two questions. (1) Is the classic macroscopic-based theoretical prediction still valid to nanoscale springs? (2) What is the effect of boundary conditions on the spring stiffness? Our results indicated that the classic prediction is valid and applicable to predicting the relationship between the spring stiffness and the spring section diameter and coil width in nanoscale springs, and that boundary conditions applied to the nanosprings will significantly affect the deformation of the springs and their stiffness values. The strict boundary condition of radial symmetry used in the classic development is responsible for producing high stiffness values. When used as a stand-alone mechanical component, a nanospring will be 2–3 times stiffer than that used as part of a film structure. With equivalent dimensions, a square helical spring will be stiffer than its round counterpart. In a square configuration, the spring stiffness can be maximized at a rising angle of 30°." @default.
