- W2012174941 abstract "Variation in consumer pressure has been invoked to explain differences in some marine communities on both large (latitudinal) and small (among areas or microhabitats) scales. On the Pacific coast of Panama, it has been hypothesized that (1) intertidal molluscs are active on ebbing and flowing tides in part to avoid predaceous fishes and (2) areas or microhabitats where fishes cannot forage effectively are likely to have a greater abundance of sessile organisms. However, fish predation has been experimentally measured only in short-term experiments at a single locale. We here examine variation in the effects of shell-crushing fishes along the rocky Pacific coast of Panama. The hypothesis that predaceous fishes are always present and active was tested by exposing gastropod shells to predaceous fishes at several sites within different regions of Panama's coast. If the hypothesis were valid, rates of shell crushing should show little temporal or spatial variation. In contrast with this prediction, our results show strong variation in rates of crushing among: (1) geographical areas of Panama, (2) sites within a single geographical area, (3) samples at different times at the same site, and (4) successive days within sites. Variation in consumer pressure is a potentially important factor and should be addressed in further studies of tropical rocky shores." @default.
