- W2012204526 abstract "Abstract Absolute density of coral skeleton was measured using gamma densitometry along a core-slice of Parites solida from Pandora Reef, near Townsville. Time series, for the period 1938 to 1982, were derived for annual maximum density, annual minimum density and annual band width. Band width was inversely related to both the annual maximum and annual minimum densities. Long-term trends ( > 8 yr) in the density time series were probably related to colonial skeletal architecture and not related to environmental variations; the local climatic data series did not show such long-term trends. Annual variations of the coral series were statistically correlated with annual variations of local climate. Annual maximum density was inversely related to cloud coverage and rainfalland was directly related to temperature in summer. Annual minimum density was related to rainfall, cloud coverage and pressure in autumn and to an index of the Southern Oscillation in autumn, winter and spring. The annual band width was strongly correlated with spring climate of the current and preceding year. Alteration of the measurement procedure to take into account the orientation of the fine band structure of the skeleton did not affect these correlations. The need to assess the generality of these results is stressed." @default.
