- W2012207382 abstract "Abstract Inhalation of organic dusts may cause an acute inflammatory reaction in the airways and fever in non-sensitised subjects. The condition has been called “Toxic pneumonitis” or “Organic dust toxic syndrome”. Micro-organisms or fragments from the cell walls of micro-organisms in the dust contribute to the reaction. Inhalation of purified endotoxin from the outer cell wall of Gram-negative bacteria causes toxic symptoms and the endotoxin concentration in dusts from cotton cardrooms and swine confinement buildings correlate with over- shift changes in lung function. Inhalation of dust from mouldy materials may also cause toxic symptoms in non-sensitised subjects. Mould aerosols are dominated by micro-organisms that do not contain endotoxin. Inflammatory cells have receptors recognising β-(1–3)-D-glucan on the cell walls of fungal spores and peptidoglycan fragments on actinomycetes and Gram-positive bacteria. Interaction with the glucan receptor on inflammatory cells causes a similar reaction as activation of the endotoxin receptor, but it remains to be shown if toxic pneumonitis can be caused by beta-glucans and peptidoglycans in analogy with endotoxin. Methods for sampling and analysis of these agents have not been standardised and the evaluation of the results of measurements from different environments requires caution." @default.
