This article discusses several of the components of the physiology and pharmacology involved in the generation of the acute pain state. Emphasis is on the afferent and spinal components. Space does not permit a consideration of the supraspinal linkages that are believed to play a crucial role in the decoding of the sensory message. Moreover, it is clear that this understanding of the properties of this afferent linkage has provided important insights into the properties of the encoding of the afferent stimulus in a manner that usefully predicts the pain state generated by tissue-damaging stimuli." @default.
