Humor wird sowohl als kognitive Leistung, die mit einer emotionalen Reaktion verbunden ist, wie auch als allgegenwärtiges soziales Phänomen aufgefaßt, das den Menschen in seiner Entwicklung von der frühen Kindheit bis ins hohe Alter begleitet. Es wird aufgezeigt, in welcher Weise sich die Humor-Produktion (v. a. von Witzen und Rätseln) sowie das Verstehen und die Wertschätzung von Humor im Verlaufe der Entwicklung verändern. Die Entwicklung des Humorverständnisses ist wesentlich vom kognitiven und sprachlichen Entwicklungsstand abhängig, während inhaltliche Veränderungen produzierten resp. geschätzten Humors mit sozialen und kulturellen Faktoren zusammenhängen. Viele Inhalte des Humors sind zudem mit wichtigen entwicklungsbezogenen Themen verknüpft, z. B. mit Gehorsam gegenüber den Eltern bei 3-jährigen Kindern, mit sexuellen Themen in der Adoleszenz, mit Ehe und Partnerschaft im frühen und verlustbezogenen Themen im späten Erwachsenenalter. Humor ist allerdings nicht nur als Produktion oder Rezeption von Witzen oder ähnlichem aufzufassen, sondern auch als Haltung angesichts von Belastungen. In belastenden Situationen humorvoll reagieren zu können, ist eine Fähigkeit, die häufig mit hoher sozialer Kompetenz einhergeht. Kinder und Jugendliche, die humorvoll reagieren, wenn eigene Interessen bedroht sind, sind eher in der Lage, Konflikte auf sozial akzeptable Weise zu lösen. Humor stellt somit bereits während Kindheit und Adoleszenz eine wichtige personale Ressource dar, die später im Erwachsenenalter mit Gewinn weiterentwickelt und gepflegt wird." @default.
